SAGE & THYME team teaches Advance Care Planning workshop for the first time in several years

Learners in a workshop

Mike Connolly and colleagues, Sheona and Ali, taught 60 respiratory care professionals (over two workshops) about end of life care conversations in Belfast last month.

Consultant nurse at The Mater Hospital, Anne Marie Marley invited the team to repeat the training from 8 years ago. “I knew it would be great, but it exceeded my expectation.”

“The feedback from our respiratory multi-disciplinary team (MDT) has been wonderful and people are already talking about how they are going to change their practice and their communication skills.”

“You got to the essence of our team and you have left us better equipped to support our patients at the most difficult time.”

Anne Marie had commissioned the ACP workshop (developed and delivered by the SAGE & THYME team) in 2018 and wanted her MDT of nurses, doctors and AHPs to have a shared awareness of:

  • the communication skills that help the ACP conversation (picking up cues, reflection, screening, clarification, parking and guiding)
  • the conversational structure (SAGE & THYME) that guides the health professional (hearing all the concerns, holding back with advice and information, allowing the person to identify their own plans)

“The impact of this training will make such a difference as we put the patients to the forefront of all we do.” said Anne Marie after the workshops.
